Award-winning Canadian editor/director Christian Viel began his career at the age of 20 by writing, producing, directing and editing Lignes de Vie, an ambitious feature length police action drama. This achievement led him to direct numerous music videos and commercials. He kept himself busy by producing, directing and editing about 50 shorts films, most of them action oriented.
In 1992, Viel directed a ten minute demo reel for BlackWatch Communications entitled The Hunter which earned him the nickname of “Montreal’s John Woo” by the press.
In 1999, Viel co-produced, directed and edited one of the first internet action series, Ghetto-Tech, (renegade rebels fighting an oppressive regime in a post-apocalyptic wasteland). That led to another flattering nickname by the press of the “Canadian Michael Bay”.
In 2002,Viel co-wrote, directed and co-edited Samhain, a slasher film based on the legend of Sawney Bean, a Scottish Cannibal who lived in the 14th Century. The film starred Bobbie Phillips, Richard Grieco and Jenna Jameson amongst others and received acclaim for its innovative and original horror scenes.
In 2003, Viel wrote, produced, directed and edited RECON 2020: The Caprini Massacre for Critical Mass Releasing, an ambitious military science-fiction film following space marines faced with a suicide mission on a deserted colony. The film won numerous awards, most notably Best Sci-Fi/Action Film at the Sci-Fi London Film Festival in England in 2005 and the Best Science-Fiction Film award at the Wreck-Beach Film Festival. The film was also an official selection of the Fantasia Film Festival as well as a special presentation at the Indie Meet Las Vegas and recently screened at the Vitesse Lumiere Film Festival in Quebec City.
In 2005, Viel produced, directed and edited DEADEN, an urban vigilante film that received critical acclaim after its showing at the prestigious Sitges Film Festival in fall 2006. The film is currently an Official Selection of the Fantasia Film Festival, 2007.
Following the international success of RECON 2020, Viel was commissioned to write and direct the sequel, RECON 2022: The Mezzo Incident. A work print of the film screened at the Sci-Fi London Film Festival on May 2007 and was an Official Selection at the Fantasia Film Festival in Montreal, and at the Sitges Film Festival in Spain.
Christian is currently completing RECON 2022: The Mezzo Incident and is in the early stages of planning the last chapter of the RECON trilogy, RECON 2023: The Gauda Prime Conspiracy.
